  • "Comrade Khrushchev and Farmer Garst," written by former-Iowa highschool student Stephen Frese, won a prize at the 2004 National History Day Competition.
  • The Cold War Through the Looking Glass, by Sergei Khrushchev (1999) describes the extreme lack of personal contact that was bridged by those first Soviet-Iowa exchanges. 
  • "When Russia met Iowa,"  by Jerry Perkins (Des Moines Register, February 14, 2009) details the relationship between Nikita Khrushchev and Roswell Garst and characterizes their exchanges as "promoting peace through corn."
